Promotional Bookmarks
Promotional bookmarks are essentially business cards in bookmark form. If your customers are heavy readers, the bookmark will keep your product, service, or cause details right in front of their eyes, unlike a standard business card.
Since the cost of basic bookmarks is only slightly more than business cards, they are one of the least expensive promotional items available.
Bookmarks can be standard paper, or more expensive products like magnetic bookmarks, rulers, or magnifying bookmarks.
Some ideas for using bookmarks include:
Place the bookmarks in books at your local library. Select books that users of your product might read.
Inquire at your local bookstore about letting you place your bookmarks in their books or on their checkout counter. Small bookstores will probably be more receptive to this than the large chains.
Leave bookmarks around universities and college hangouts in your area.

Mail
If you send a lot of mail (snail mail, not the 'e' kind), why not take advantage of the opportunity to help brand your business and maybe attract a few more customers?
Some ideas include, adding your business card to letters, using a custom rubber stamp to imprint your envelopes, or to make a real impression…why not buy customised postage stamps with your logo or product photos.

Signs
One marketing idea for those who commute or otherwise spend a lot of time on the road is using magnetic vehicle signs. It seems like it would be one way to put your business name in front of a lot of eyeballs for very little money. I found one site that has prices starting at $9/sign.
For this to be successfull, I’d think you would need to have a fairly memorable business name (or website address), as few people are going to pull out a pen and paper just to copy down your sign information!
