Advertising strategy has always been about keeping up with the cutting edge more than anything else. Throughout the history of advertising, marketing companies that fall behind always fall apart soon after. Nonetheless, advertising on the Internet takes things to a whole new level of complexity. Someone noticed there was a lot of empty white space going unused and decided to take advantage of it.

At any one time, scanning the “Advertising Opportunities” section on eBay reveals some interesting ideas people have come up with to make money. These include auctions such as ‘advertise on my car’, advertise on my chest’, and even ‘advertise on my living room wall‘.

I recently (a little over a week ago) thought I’d try a bit of this and won an ‘advertise on my car’ auction. This auction was by a college student who promised to display my ad for a year.

The ad isn’t up as of yet… but at the price I paid it might be a bargain. Who knows?

US Airways is planning to begin selling ad space on its air-sickness bags in September as a way to create added revenue. “We’re trying to stay innovative and be on the cutting edge in terms of generating revenue,” said US Airways spokeswoman Valerie Wunder.
